Fungi v. Rainforest series tumblers 2004
H: 8.5 cm
$180 Sold
Thrown and altered, using Walkers Imperial porcelain clay. When bone dry fine colloidal slips were applied to the exterior surface and ash glaze to the interior. The tumblers were raw fired in a long throat bourry box wood kiln with a soda/calcite/water mix introduced after cone 8 was down. Firing continued to cone 11, a total of 36 hours, and the kiln reduction cooled. The pots were polished with fine wet and dry sandpaper. This process has produced translucent pots with a soft sheen and subtle carbon trapping.
Maker's statement: My life and interests all influence my work. Following a major 'sea-change' in early 2003, I now live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, where the forms and colours of the flora of the rainforest on our land fascinate me - particularly the fungi. I work in porcelain clays with the addition of fine colloidal slips and soda/wood firing. My work is currently focused on formulating clay bodies/slips that will react with the soda/wood to give subtle flashings and carbon trapping.
