Maker's statement: Clay possesses an energy and force of its own, dictating movement through its plasticity, structural strength and response to the hand. In developing a vocabulary of form, surface and aesthetic, one must recognise and understand the inherent qualities and limitations of the material. The wheel has been an important tool for me in providing a continual domain of exploration and in achieving this consciousness. 'The fort' is one piece within a series of works suggestive of spaces, objects or symbols to which we relate in our everyday lives. They evoke a sense of familiarity or recognition in the viewer, yet also call for a further analysis of identification and form. Almost animated, the works speak of movement, or of a life within, while simultaneously appearing static.
