Maker's statement: I have always been fascinated with the surface of clay, the texture, grain, variety of colours and the response of the surface to the firing processes that can be used. The development of textures on the surface and combining this with the throwing process has always aroused my curiosity. It has only been in the last few years that I have seen the possibilities of combining them. I have always wanted the surface texture to be integral to the form and the process of throwing, rather than appearing to be an applied surface, or extra layer, put on at a later stage. The surface has to have an immediacy that links it to the movement of the clay on the wheel and the expansion and stretching that results from the act of throwing. The use of woodfiring and salt glazing exposes the rawness of the making and all the details of the clay and its textural response. The qualities of the clay itself ( the range of colours available ) enhance the stretching and textures that result from the making. The location in the kiln and the way the pieces are fired are captured on the clay surface.
